SMD and Me
Growth Through Inclusion
Rethinking our Communities
SMD Services - Community Education and Training
What kind of community do we want to be?
Communities thrive on diversity. It’s what makes us grow strong.
Throughout history, successful societies have built their futures on diverse opinions, diverse resources and, above all, people of diverse origins, abilities and ambitions.
Although this recognition of all the potential of our differences is stronger than ever today, barriers remain. People with disabilities continue to face obstacles to full community participation – obstacles that have more to do with attitude than actuality.
Through stereotyping and misinformation, we often find ourselves seeing an individual’s disability before their ability. We assume a limitation rather than seeing real potential.
The Society for Manitobans with Disabilities is helping to change that. We have seen a strong desire in our community to involve everyone. And we have responded with our Community Education and Training initiative.
Community Education and Training from SMD Services has been helping governments, corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations and others rethink how they involve people with disabilities in their day-to-day operations and in their long-term plans.
From manufacturing to retailing, business to government, managers are looking for tools that will help them update attitudes.
Our community is changing
Professionals in the education field, for example, are concerned with access issues for people in wheelchairs and are addressing questions of attitude in the classroom.
Service personnel in a changing retail sector are benefiting from training that helps them adapt to the challenges many of their clients with disabilities experience.
Management and supervisory people are gaining greater insight into how to manage persons with disabilities in the workplace.
Universities. Multi-national corporations. Hotels. Government offices. Shops and department stores. Public transit. Throughout our community, people are looking for the tools that will help them update attitudes and streamline environments to make disability simply one more productive part of everyday life.
Community Education and Training is doing its part to bring about change.
Through small group training sessions and workshops, information packages and other initiatives, we are able to offer well-rounded education and training services.
As a result of these services, employers, organizations and the community-at-large will become more committed to making changes within their environments. They will acquire the knowledge to provide the kind of environment that will enable an individual with a disability to compete for employment and participate to their full potential in the community.
