Recreation and Life Skills Programming
The SMD Recreation and Life Skills Program enables children living with disabilities to enjoy a variety of fun and educational recreation and life experiences.
The goal of the SMD Recreation and Life Skills Program is to improve and encourage available programming for children with a disability so they have an equal opportunity to enjoy different aspects of community living. For example, when a child with a dsiability goes camping, SMD helps parents connect with an SMD worker who helps make sure that all a child's needs will be properly met and that they are able to safely participate in activities.
To make such programming possible, SMD offers year-round support to various service providers and community-based programs throughout Manitoba. This support can take many forms including funding, partnership building, coordinating activity schedules and recruiting the volunteers who help make different programs possible.
Through the various activities and experiences, children with disabilities enhance their education while developing various life-skills that promote greater independence and self-confidence.
Throughout the year, SMD helps provide:
- Summer programs of weekend camping trips;
- Summer day trips to different locations throughout the City of Winnipeg; and
- Fall, winter and spring programs offered through Winnipeg Parks and Recreation
